Economy
Atom offers a comprehensive plan to get the District's economy back on track. By creating new jobs and easing the tax burden on hardworking citizens, we will attract new investment and offer new opportunities for jobseekers. Specific economic initiatives include:
- Raising the Minimum Wage
- Supporting Small Businesses
- Preventing Home Foreclosures
- Protecting a Workers Right to Organize
- Increasing Infrastructure and Public Works Project Funding
Education
Children come first for Atom. As mayor, he will launch a radical restructuring of D.C.'s failing schools. By investing in early childhood education, improved infrastructure, high-quality teachers and focusing on math and science, Atom will ensure a promising future for our youth. Atom pledges to:
- Recruit, Prepare, Retain, and Reward Teachers
- Invest in Higher Education
- Put Technology in Every Classroom
- Emphasize Math and Science
- Reduce Dropouts and Truancy
- Expand Afterschool Programs to Every Campus
- Provide Affordable Childcare
Environment
Clean rivers and parks will be a priority in an Atom Administration. Cleaning up the Anacostia and Potomac and improving our parks will help make all District residents proud of our great outdoors once again. Atom's Action Plan for the Environment:
- Hire Additional Park Maintenance Staff
- Crack Down on Illegal Dumping
- Improve and Expand our Trails
- Step-up Enforcement and Prosecution of Polluters
Public Safety
Atom has a long record of standing up for the little guy against a broad range of evildoers. As mayor, he will put more police on the streets and expand community policing. Working with the Police Chief, Mayor Atom would:
- Increase Patrols and Expand the Use of Video Surveillance in High-Crime Areas
- Crack Down on Violent Gang Activity
- Start Addressing Drug Abuse as a Public Health Concern Rather than a Criminal One
- Support and Expand Community Policing Initiatives
- Increase Community Outreach and Youth Activities by the Police Department
Health
Having fought an ancient cancer, Atom knows the importance of good health to a community. There are several strategies he will employ as Mayor to promote public health:
- Proactive Prevention of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases
- Ensure Access to Medicare/Medicaid for all who are Eligible
- Expand Income-Adjusted Community Clinics
- Promote Healthy Lifestyles including Diet and Exercise
- Ensure Healthy School Lunch Programs on Every Campus
Core Beliefs
In addition to the specific policy platforms and priorities above, Atom will seek to be a voice for the voiceless. Atom is an advocate for the little guy and has a few core beliefs that will define his tenure as Mayor. These beliefs are what inspired him to run for Mayor and what keep him up at night with concern.
Atom Believes:
Civil Rights are not optional. All men and women of any race, color, creed, national origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation or sexual identity/expression must be treated equally in the District if we are to be successful as a city.
Government must be held to the highest ethical standard. Transparency and accountability will be paramount in an Atom Administration.
Poverty, homelessness and hunger are not just sad stories; they are a moral outrage that must be given our full attention. Mayor Atom would give the least among us the assistance they need.
